Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground

Ryan and I heard this the other day on WDET while driving around. It's pretty embalming in its eeriness.

  1. this is fantastic. i got really heavy into roots music this last summer. if anyone through this blog is interested, i digitized a double-lp for a friend, and i can send you the mp3's.

    each side is stylistically different.
    side 1: country blues
    side 2: city blues
    side 3: gospel & jazz
side 4: country, cajun, & folk

  2. I love Blind Willie Johnson.

    This one breaks my heart:

    The last verse. Christ, almighty.

Yeah! Side three of the roots lp Brad just posted about has this great song on it called 'Eh, La-Bas!', which translates to "hey, down there" or "hey, the damned!". I guess I like the second translation better: it's a nice allusion to the Huysmans novel by the same name, and it adds another dimension to the celebratory, New-Orleans-debauched atmosphere of the song. Really excellent stuff.

  3. Ashley, is the Huysmans you're referring to that same one who wrote 'Against the Grain'?

  4. Ashley, I love this song you've posted. Now I understand how every Spiritualized song ever was written.
And, please, Brad, if I can get a copy of that I would be largely in your debt.

    Keep your lamp trimmed,

  5. Amanda: Yes! It was Huysmans, and the overwhelming cause of a strange, decadent recluse period I got myself into awhile ago. I never did cover a tortoise shell in jewels, but somehow it still sounds like a sweet idea to me. Literary pets are the best sort; I met two cats named Franny and Zooey at a bookstore the other week--- It was lovely. =)

Justin: Glad you liked it. There are a few songs like that for me. I suppose I'll post some later.

  6. Justin: No problem dude, I'll burn you some cds. Just realized my files are saved in *.ogg, meaning the raw files would do you no good unless you're running a linux OS.
